The adventure begins!
In July 2001 I visited the San Francisco Zoo with the intent of practicing with a new zoom lens a friend had given to me. When I zoomed in on Cobby, the male chimpanzee, he stared back at be for the longest time and basically said "I'm an intelligent being, what are you going to do about it?" I looked at the other chimpanzees in the exhibit and realized they all had incredible faces. Mature, wrinkled and their eyes had a primal wisdom that I had never witnessed before. Thus started my adventure of painting portraits of these sentient beings.
In 2004 I was invited to exhibit my Portraits of Great Apes at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History.
It was an honor to be allowed to share my work and it turned out to be a great success for everyone involved.
I am forever indebted to the Museum's Curator, Paul Finnegan, for his kindness, generosity and wisdom.
